Aviation Industry in 1957: Nonmilitary Aviation

Although firms continued to deliver substantial numbers of piston engine transports to the commercial airlines during 1957, the way was being cleared for phasing out these long-established types. About 257 long range piston engine transports including DC-7‘s, DC-6‘s, and Lockheed Super constellations and Star liners were delivered, as well as an estimated 60 Convair 440 medium range piston engine planes. However, all the major firms were rapidly approaching delivery dates for the first production models of the new turbojet and turboprop aircraft.
