A doctor who performed abortions was killed and another wounded in separate shootings, as violence against abortion clinics appeared to escalate. In March, Dr. David Gunn was killed outside his clinic in Pensacola, FL. Michael F. Griffin, an antiabortion protester, surrendered to police and was charged with the crime. Five months later Dr. George R. Tiller was shot and wounded near his clinic in Wichita, KS; the clinic, which performed late-term abortions had been the scene of vigorous protests. Rachelle Shannon, described as an antiabortion activist, was arrested and charged with attempted murder. Abortion facilities also were the target of nine bomb or arson attacks during the first nine months of the year — far more than in previous years. In November both houses of the U.S. Congress passed bills to protect abortion clinics from violent attacks. The measures were expected to go to a Senate-House conference early in 1994.
